Parent Concerns

       If your child comes home and informs you about a problem with another student, please relay that concern to your child’s teacher or an administrator.  We will follow up with this concern.  Parents should NOT investigate on their own by confronting the other student.  We have procedures which must be followed and offer every child due process, the opportunity to tell their side of the story.  When the administration makes a decision regarding consequences, this information is only shared with the students’ parents or guardians.  Please do not ask us to violate confidentiality procedures by demanding to know what kind of disciplinary action is being taken. 

       Remember that “discipline” means “to teach” and in elementary school, we are teaching students about following rules, treating others respectfully, and learning from their mistakes. 

Edline Parent Code

       If you did not receive your Edline parent code to access certain information on the school web page (www.halekula.k12.hi.us), please email Principal Iwase at jan_iwase@notes.k12.hi.us and she will send you the letter with your code. 

Jingle Bell Run

Our 8^th Annual Jingle Bell Run will be Wed. Dec. 5 but we will collect differently this year. Instead of bringing gently used toys to donate we are making a cash donation to Laulima Giving Program. Each child is asked to bring $1.00 to the field before walking or running to holiday music for 20 minutes. Laulima means cooperation and working together. This program helps Hawaii’s struggling families’ by providing them with life’s basic necessities, year round emergency assistance and a brighter holiday season. Thank you for your donation.

If you are PCSing or changing schools please let the office know ASAP.  They usually ask for 2 weeks notice to get a release packet ready for the next school.

Aloha Parents,  It was recently brought to my attention that there are a few children who have recently viewed inappropriate websites and have passed the site information on to other students.  You are encouraged to discuss appropriate usage guidelines with your child. We will continue to ensure that students are blocked from inappropriate web sites, and that our strict usage guidelines are enforced at school.   At home, might I suggest ensuring that computer usage be in a location that is easily visible to you and that you monitor your child's usage regularly.  Children should be careful of sites such as Youtube which make inappropriate links accessible with a simple click.   There are several programs that can be used to monitor viewed sites.  Some parents have found the following link useful, http://www.wikihow.com/Block-a-Specific-Website-Without-Software&adt=0

Third grade is reaching beyond our state lines to help those that were victims of Super Storm Sandy. Thanks to your generous donations they have raised over $1000. so far! Next week is the last week to donate.  The money collected will be put onto two gift cards one for the Brooklyn Foundation and the other for Save the Children.

Giving Thanks

As we approach a three-day school week to celebrate Thanksgiving, this is a perfect opportunity to reflect on my principalship at Hale Kula and all that I am thankful for.  What makes a school special and unique is its people, and Hale Kula is no exception.

All of my schooling has been here in Hawaii, and I can't imagine being uprooted in the middle of the year and having to go to a new school, make new friends, learn new rules, procedures, and curriculum, and adjust to these new surroundings. Yet our Hale Kula students are asked to do this not once but multiple times in their school careers.  More often than not, this is occurring while a parent is attending training or is deployed.  Our students make the best of their situation even while they are missing a parent who may be off-island for training exercises or who may be deployed and in harm's way.  I marvel at their resilience, and my hope is that they will take what they've learned at Hale Kula about aloha, lokahi, kokua, `ohana, kuleana, and malama and share it with others when they leave Hawaii.

I am grateful to the Hale Kula parents who support our school and trust us with their children.  Military  parents' lives are so different from what I experienced as a young mom when I had family and friends to support me.  Being uprooted from their system of support is a challenge, and their confidence in our school to take care of their children is a responsibility we take seriously.  To the soldier parents who have committed to serving and protecting our nation, I send my heartfelt thanks.  And to the spouse who is left behind to take care of the home and the family while the soldier is deployed, you deserve kudos for all you do.  It takes a strong person to accept and adapt to military life and often, you turn every new change of duty station as an adventure and a learning opportunity for your family.  Mahalo for all you do.

I am so honored to be at a school with such a great staff.  I love going to work every day because I work with people who care about our school as much as I do.  Others may not realize the challenges of working with a highly transient military population, but your commitment and pride in your work is what makes our school so special.  I hope you realize the positive impact you have, long after the students and families have left Hale Kula and Hawaii.  I am truly proud to be part of our Hale Kula `ohana.

May all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

Auditions

Once again Central Theatre Arts Academy Performing Arts Learning Center is getting ready to hold auditions for their latest production, The Sound of Music. As a state learning center, they are interested in reaching as many public school students as possible. This year they are looking for children aged 5-18 as younger children for the von Trapp family, and older students to play all of the adult roles. There is no cost to any student who is involved in productions.

            Mililani High School is the host school for CTAA. All rehearsals and performances will take place at Mililani High School after school. There is more information available on their website. www.CentralTheatreArtsAcademy.org

Helping victims of Super Storm Sandy

Third grade has been working very hard on a community unit and has decided to reach beyond our state lines and help those that were victims of Super Storm Sandy. They are collecting money (coins) in each classroom. A letter should have gone home with the youngest and only students in their Wed. Folders and each student will have a chance to donate in the ziploc bags. Third Grade will come around and collect the bags daily. The money collected will be put onto two gift cards one for the Brooklyn Foundation and the other for Save the Children. This continues until Nov. 30

Make up Picture Taking

Friday, November 9 is make up picture taking on the stage. If you started Hale Kula after September 19 then your picture will be taken for the yearbook.  If you do not like the pictures that were taken the first time, then bring back the entire packet to school and the student will give it to Lifetouch and take a new picture. Your child should be able to tell photographer what was wrong with the first picture.

Dress Code Matters

Strapless or spaghetti straps or transparent tops are not ok unless another top is worn over or under. Straps on shirts must be 1 inch wide. Any clothing or accessories that are deemed unsafe, leave at home. Running shoes or flats are best at school. Students should not wear make up.

Be a part of National Walk or Ride your bide to school month.

Let’s enjoy our lovely weather and walk to avoid more cars on the road.  It’s good for the environment and good for your health and helps you get to school on time.  As parents we ask your help in getting your child to school every day on time.  We have bike racks on both sides of the school and encourage you to lock your bike to the racks every day.  Scooters are not allowed on campus. Protect your school and library books inside your backpack by putting plastic bags around them.  Enjoy your walk!

                      Buddy Pictures are casual pictures that will be in the yearbook standing with your friends. $1.00 for each person in the picture.  During morning recess for 1^st and 3^rd and 5^th grade.  And after school for everyone next to P14.

Kids Vote Hawai’i

The website is www.kidsvotinghawaii.org. Explore the ballot together, visit the candidate and party links, and discuss the issues. You will need the students password from the half sheet of paper that came home last week. Once they push submit their votes will be recorded and announced on the news on KHVH as soon as polls close on November 6^th.
