Staff Parking Only

We've been having problems with parents  double-parking and blocking other cars in the afternoons.  Remember that the parking lot by the cafeteria is reserved for staff parking in the mornings when school begins and in the afternoons when school ends.  Several of our staff members have been blocked in and cannot leave, making them late for appointments or other jobs.  If the situation does not improve, we will have no choice but to tow these cars.  Please be considerate so we are not forced to call the towing company.

Kids Vote Hawai’i

The website is www.kidsvotinghawaii.org. Explore the ballot together, visit the candidate and party links, and discuss the issues. Look for half sheet of paper with each students’ individual password to come home soon.  Once they push submit their votes will be recorded and announced on the news on KHVH as soon as polls close on November 6^th.

Volunteers for Flu Clinic

Do We Have Your Correct Phone #?

Yesterday,. we sent out a mass message to inform parents about the lockdown.  Some parents came in today to inform us that they didn't receive the message.

The system  calls and leaves a message on your home phone.  If you prefer us to call your cell phone, please let us know; we will make the change.

Although the system has the capability to leave a text message, we opted not to use this feature since users may be charged for each text or parents may not use text messaging.

The lockdown yesterday provided us with an opportunity to improve our procedures.  Our staff has provided some good suggestions which we will implement in the future.  Hopefully, it'll be a drill and not a real lockdown.

We appreciate all the positive comments on Facebook about how our staff responded to this situation and kept the students calm and safe!  We'd also like to thank the parents who were patient and trusted us with their children.

Be a part of National Walk or Ride your bide to school month.

Let’s enjoy our lovely weather and walk to avoid more cars on the road.  It’s good for the environment and good for your health and helps you get to school on time.  As parents we ask your help in getting your child to school every day on time.  We have bike racks on both sides of the school and encourage you to lock your bike to the racks every day.  Scooters are not allowed on campus. Protect your school and library books inside your backpack by putting plastic bags around them.  Enjoy your walk!

Eth-No-Tec is coming on November 2 from 2:15 – 3:30.

Families are encouraged to enjoy this unique dramatic performance in the school cafeteria.  Look for the flier and send back the bottom portion to RSVP for this kinetic storytelling event.

Sat. Oct. 27        ANNUAL PUMPKIN CARVIN FESTIVAL GOES WINDWARD

 The Pumpkin Carving Festival has found a new home at Windward Mall. This annual event is a tradition to kickoff the Fall season, with families gathering together to carve pumpkins for the holidays. Windward Mall is the location for families to enjoy quality time together in a festive atmosphere. Michigan Master Carver, Pumpkin Ed, will again be at the Festival carving his 1,000 lb. giants. Pumpkin Ed was a huge hit with our families last year. Come and watch him create his whimsical characters, then have their photos taken with these giant pumpkins.        Families can make their reservations and pre-purchase their packages on the website. Each package ($35 for family of four) includes a medium size pumpkin, a carving kit (scooper, mini saw/paring knife), gloves and stencils, and a reserved work table. Seating times are 10 a.m., 1 p.m., or 4 p.m. Each seating is limited to the first 250 families.

Walk or Ride and Get to School on Time!

From October 18 through November 22, we will be encouraging students to "Walk or Bike and Get to School on Time." We have our baseline data and have set our goals -- 63% of our students walking or biking to school (right now, we have 43%) and decrease the number of tardies by 50% (right now, we are averaging 41 tardies per day). I've heard that families who walk to school often arrive earlier or at the same time as neighbors who take their car. So get up earlier and walk or bike with your children! It's good for your health and good for the environment!

"The Rewards of Reading"

As we return to school for the second quarter, here's a short flyer from the National Association of Elementary School Principals which explains "The Rewards of Reading" and shares ideas when reading with your children.

Personally, I loved to read with my students at school and with my three sons when they were younger.  Now that I'm a grandmother, I love reading with my grandsons whenever we visit them (they don't live in Hawaii).  I found that even the most rascal children settle down and listen attentively when I read a book that piques their interest.  One of the greatest indicators of success when children start school is whether they've been read to at home. Even though students read books in school, we encourage parents to spend time sharing books with children at home.

Here's a quote which I love and which I have lived by.  Of course, today, we should also include "father" in the poem.
