2/27 - 3/6

Thank you for making our Book Fair a HUGE success.  We saw many happy children with books in their hands and all classrooms received books!  Mahalo to the parent volunteers who worked the book fair, created bulletin board displays and another special thanks to Ashley Simonton for painting the photo op shark for our family event.  Thank you for opening a world of possible and putting books in our kids' hands!

We celebrate Dr. Seuss's Birthday during Read Across America week March 2-6.  As a special treat, soldiers from our military partnership will read to classrooms.  Visit the library website http://halekula library.weebly.com to see pictures of Read Across America Events from previous years and check back soon to see pictures from this school year.

Art to Remember
Our Art teacher comes around to all classrooms on a rotating schedule on Wednesdays. During these recent art lessons she has had students draw underwater scenes. This is drawn with crayon on special paper that can be used by Art to Remember to put on mousepads or cups as you choose to order. If your child was absent when their class drew their picture, they can still complete the project.  Stop by P14 and pick up a few pieces of this special paper. Have your child draw a picture with crayon and fill the entire page. Return it to P14 no later than next Wednesday, Feb. 25, make sure your child’s full name, teacher and classroom are included on separate paper clipped to it.

Ohana Heroes Project
The University of Hawaii has been selected for a grant to examine the impact of military deployment. Our goal is to determine and develop the types of resources and programs that would be most helpful for military families coping with extended separation. The study will take 4-5 hours over the course of a week to complete. Families with at least one child between the ages of 7 and 17 are eligible to participate. $100 compensation will be provided for families’ time and effort. All data collected will be kept confidential and de-identified. For your convenience and ease, study staff are able to make appointments after school hours and/or weekends for you and your child and can meet you at a location of your choosing, including your home. For more information about the study, please visit www.ohanaheroes.com and call (808-933-3861) or email (contact@ohanaheroes.com) to schedule a screening eligibility call.
