The evacuation drill went quite well today. We were told that this was the most orderly and efficient school evacuation drill so far :-) Special thanks to the teachers and other staff for preparing and walking quietly with the students, to Mrs. Leinau for coordinating everything, to the office staff for ensuring that they were prepared, and to the parents for trusting us to take care of their children in case of an emergency. We got a few suggestions from the military, and we will be changing a few things for next year's evacuation drill. I hope you all received the mass message we sent out at about 8:45 a.m.
We are proud of our VEX IQ team for qualifying for the World Championship in Anaheim in late April. We have funds for their travel to California, but the team is fundraising to pay for their lodging, ground transportation, meals, and incidentals. If you would like to contribute, the team has set up a website. Please consider supporting the team.

Evacuation Drill - Thursday, February 27
Tomorrow (Thursday, February 27), weather permitting, we will be holding our annual emergency evacuation drill. Students will be escorted to a safe location (Bennett Youth Center), and military personnel will be observing the entire drill so they can provide us with feedback on areas of strength and areas of need. Please send your child to school with comfortable walking shoes and be sure he/she is on-time. We want our students in school so they can participate in the drill. Parents, please do not get alarmed when you see the school evacuating. This is only a drill so we will be prepared if ever a real-life situation necessitates an actual evacuation.
Here's a re-post of a blog from back in September 2013 re. the evacuation drill. This was written prior to the first planned date of our drill which was postponed by the military.

These Girls Rock!
Our team of 3 4th grade girls took on the VEX IQ challenge and came out a winner! They came in 10th place in the State Competition today and qualified to move on to the finals. They didn't win the robot challenge, but they won the Design Award which means, they go to Anaheim for the World Championships in April! Wow! Our coaches, +Vera Yamanaka and +Tami Sego deserve kudos for guiding the team through the whole competition. It's fundraising time!
