Hooray for Volunteers and Staff!

We have many volunteers and staff members who go out of their way to support our students and their families at Hale Kula.  Every quarter, we randomly select one volunteer and one staff member who have been nominated on our blog to receive a $50 gift card.  Go to our school website at www.halekula.k12.hi.us.  On the home page, there are links to the two blogs -- one for volunteers and one for staff.  Click on the pencil to comment; you can make your comment anonymously or include your name. Once your comment has been submitted, it must be approved before it is published.

The quarter is almost over!  Please consider nominating someone today.

Thank you!

1 million computer programming jobs go unfilled in the US each year.
Only 400,000 students graduate with computer programming degrees.  Only 10% of US schools teach coding.
Code.org and Computer Science Education Week are trying to change these statistics and connect our children with jobs in this lucrative industry.  The Hour of Code, December 9-13, introduces K-12 students to simple programming. Throughout the week, students will be "leveling up" in fun computer coding activities in their classrooms, the library and technology center.  Try it at home too!
Visit the library website http://goo.gl/dcSZCw to watch videos, find iPad coding apps for children and click the links to complete the tutorials.

Great News!

Thanks to Librarian, Michelle Colte, our school will be participating in a global event called Hour of Code.  If you're not familiar with coding, you're in for a treat!  Students have begun learning about coding in the library, and yesterday, some first graders were so excited to show me what they've learned.

Hour of Code week is December 9-13, and every class will have an opportunity to participate in the fun and challenging coding activities in the library or in the classroom.  We will have soldiers from our partner unit, HHBN 25th ID, helping us (like they did for the Cardboard Challenge earlier this school year). Be ready for an exciting week!!

And now, I've saved the best news for last!!  Of all the public schools in Hawaii that signed up to participate in Hour of Code, Hale Kula was selected to receive $10,000 worth of technology and resources!!  Appreciations to Mrs. Colte for having the foresight to sign up all of us to participate!

Because we received this award, we have been asked to invite the media as well as dignitaries to our school for a special event.  We have just begun planning the event, and we will definitely keep you all in the loop.

What an exciting opportunity for our school to share with others across the State!

For more information, check out the Hour of Code link on the Library link on school webpage at www.halekula.k12.hi.us.

Fall Fest Coming Soon!

Are you planning on attending the Hale Kula PTO Fall Fest on Saturday, November 16 from 1:00-5:00 p.m.?  There will be food, fantastic fun, and  family-oriented games and activities.  Fall Fest is going to be a great event, but we can't do it without your help! If you can give an hour of your time, please let us know. We need people to sell tickets, be floaters to give relief to those running booths, and to help clean up after the event is over. Contact Amanda Pemberton at apemberton79@gmail.com if you can help. Thank you!
