June 1 and Beyond

Hale Kula's new Makerspace is gladly accepting your donations of arts & craft items. Have a bag of fabric scraps to discard?  Or other craft supplies you would rather not pack?  Are your kids done with their Rainbow Looms or Magnatiles?  See complete list of needs here: http://bit.ly/1G17b2C  Drop donations in labeled collection boxes in the office or outside G4.

The Hale Kula Library's online resource page will still be available this summer for families to watch animated books on Tumblebooks, to learn about famous people and events in World Almanac Online or to watch science videos in True Flix and Pebble Go. http://bit.ly/14hkesOR

The Hawaii State Public Library System and Sgt Yano library have great summer reading programs for children and families. Children receive weekly prizes for tracking their reading and families are invited to special presentations at the libraries. Help your child find a "just right book" and encourage your child to read both fiction and nonfiction.  Choose one of your favorite childhood books for a family read aloud or search online for some tasty new recipes to try this summer.

Scholastic also has a great summer reading program with incentives and an animated story a week from a famous author.  Click here to learn more.

May 16, 2015

This past Wednesday, Hale Kula Parent Teacher Organization members voted unanimously to accept an Interim Board.  Thank you to Katie Horrigan, Amanda Pemberton, Jennifer Calhoun, and Marleen Clarke for volunteering to serve as PTO Board members until an election can be held in August.  The Interim Board will be responsible for the following:  a) Inventory PTO supplies/resources and prepare for the move to P15B; b) Ensure that funds for projects that the PTO Board approved are paid for; and c) Set the guidelines and oversee the PTO Board election in August.  From hereon, we are moving forward and ensuring that the PTO is on firm ground when the new school year begins.

Thank you to all parents who completed the School Community Council survey.  The SCC will be reviewing the results at our meeting on Monday, May 18, and we will share the results with the community afterwards.

Finally, here is a link to a blog about our construction project.   For those of you who will be leaving Hawaii this summer, we welcome you to subscribe to the blog by typing in your email address and then pressing "submit." You and your child can then follow the progress of our construction project.

Thanks, and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

5/15 - 5/22

All library books are due Friday, May 15.  Please ask your child if he/she has returned his/her library book.  Students with outstanding books/damages have received notification papers and teachers have been informed.  If you have questions or need to pay a fine in person, please call/visit the library Monday, Tuesday or Thursday between 8:00 - 2:00.  305-3451

Lunch account payments cash only.
All accounts must have the exact amount to cover meals from May 22 through June 3 {last day for students} as we are not permitted to allow overdrafts or give loans over those last few days.  Please keep track of your child's lunch account.  We have a day to day breakdown on the office front counter to help calculate how much will be needed ... breakfast is $1. or $0.30 for reduced, lunch is $2.25 or $0.40 for reduced, extra milk is $0.60 and, if you let us know, we can put a flag in the computer that says no second milk purchases allowed.  Unfortunately, we have had to instigate a policy that students with outstanding debts (usually library books & lunch overdrafts) will not be permitted to participate in Water Play days May 28 & 29.... we don't like to punish the children AND it does seem to inspire parents to bring the money owing. Thanks for your cooperation.

PTO Meeting

We have a PTO meeting scheduled for Wednesday, May 13 from 1:20 p.m. in the cafeteria. The meeting is to vote on whether to put in place an Interim Board until August 2015 when a new election for PTO officers can be held.  We are holding this meeting at a time when both parents and staff can attend to vote on this important issue, and we intend to start promptly at 1:20 p.m. to allow teachers to vote before attending their scheduled meetings.

The Hale Kula PTO has provided much support to our school community, and parents and staff would like to see this organization continue.  An Interim Board will provide the organization to continue, to provide a smooth transition to a new Board, and to start fresh when the new school year begins.

We hope you will be able to attend to vote on the proposal to have an Interim Board in place until a new election can be held in August 2015.
